Sometimes, work can feel like the worst thing in life. It’s often viewed as nothing more than a means to an end. Most of the time, the only thought on your mind is, “What am I going to do when I get out of this damn place?” Yet every now and again, something truly funny happens at work, changing your perspective and reminding you that work can sometimes be enjoyable.

A True Story from My Past

The following is a true story that occurred about five years ago.

I worked as a vehicle engineer in the Army, having slowly progressed through the ranks to eventually become a Staff Sergeant after 18 years. My responsibilities included the day-to-day repair of around 200 vehicles and managing a team of 20 tradesmen.

One morning, I was called into the ASM’s (Boss) office. He must have been feeling bored because he informed me he was going to test the guys’ engineering and adaptability skills. As he spoke, I could feel myself starting to daydream. He decided to organize a “Great Egg Race.” The challenge was for the tradesmen to create a self-powered machine that could carry an egg the furthest distance across the shop floor, and it couldn’t contain any metallic parts. I tried to seem enthusiastic, but deep down, I was wondering who would be at the snooker club that night.

Preparation for the Race

The next morning, I walked into the ASM’s office to find him covered in cardboard and tape. “I will show the boys who can design a machine,” he declared, and I left him to his work. To my surprise, the Great Egg Race attracted a lot of interest. The young tradesmen had been split into groups of three and were busy designing and manufacturing all sorts of creative inventions.

When I entered the Boss’s office again, he was sitting behind his desk with a smug look on his face. “It’s ready,” he said, opening his locker to reveal a cardboard contraption. He smiled so broadly that I thought he had fallen in love with his creation. “That’s the winner,” he exclaimed.

The Big Day Arrives

The day of the race finally arrived, and morale was high, especially since the afternoon would be spent drinking beer. After lunch, the beer flowed freely, and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves. A few hours later, the ASM called all the entries forward for the race. I must admit that even though I wasn’t participating, I was very impressed by the intricate designs of the self-propelled machines.

As the Boss emerged from his office holding his cardboard creation, he was confident he would win, boasting about his years of engineering experience. The eggs were distributed to the team captains, and the Boss insisted on going first, which was met with groans from everyone. His egg was carefully placed in the cardboard cockpit of his machine, which resembled a drag racer powered by a strong elastic band. With everything in place, the timekeeper shouted, “Stand by… GO!”

The Hilarious Race

The Boss released his contraption, and the cardboard wheels spun furiously, nearly catching fire. However, the machine remained stationary for a moment. Eventually, it flipped upside down and cracked the egg inside.

I tried to maintain my composure, but I couldn’t help myself; I fell on the floor laughing uncontrollably. The situation escalated when the Boss, frustrated, demanded another egg. He was reminded of the rules, which stated that contestants were only allowed one egg. Ultimately, a new egg was issued to him, allowing him another attempt.

With the new egg secured, the Boss charged the rubber band tighter than before. When the machine was released this time, it shot forward, speeding across the shop floor, chased by over 50 people, including the Boss, who was jumping up and down like a schoolboy, yelling, “Go on, you beauty!”

Reflection on the Day

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying more beer. Every time I looked at the Boss’s beaming face, I couldn’t help but laugh. This small incident reminded me that I should not take work too seriously; at times, it can actually be fun.

In conclusion, moments like these at work can bring joy and laughter, reminding us that amidst the daily grind, there’s always room for humor and enjoyment.
