What Is Blackjack?

Blackjack, also known as Twenty-One, is a classic casino card game played between the player and the dealer. The objective is straightforward: get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over, while beating the dealer’s total. Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, and the Ace can count as either 1 or 11 — whichever benefits your hand most.

What makes Blackjack stand apart from pure luck-based casino games is that your decisions genuinely matter. Every choice you make — whether to hit, stand or double down — changes the expected outcome of the hand. That blend of accessible rules and meaningful strategy is exactly why Blackjack has remained one of the most searched and most played card games in the world for decades.

How to Play Blackjack

Place Your Bet

Before any cards are dealt, select your bet by clicking on the chip denominations shown at the bottom of the table. You can stack multiple chips to build the exact amount you want to wager. When you are happy with your bet, press the Deal button to start the hand.

The Deal

You receive two cards face up. The dealer also receives two cards, but one of them — the hole card — is placed face down. You can see one of the dealer’s cards, which gives you a clue about the strength of their hand and helps you decide your next move.

Your Options

Hit — Draw another card from the deck. You can hit as many times as you like, but if your total exceeds 21 you bust and lose the hand immediately.

Stand — Keep your current hand and pass the turn to the dealer. Choose this when you are confident your total is strong enough to beat the dealer.

Double Down — Available on your first two cards when you have sufficient balance. You double your original bet and receive exactly one more card. High-risk, high-reward — a popular move when your two-card total is 10 or 11.

The Dealer Plays

Once you stand or double down, the dealer reveals the hole card and plays according to fixed rules: the dealer must hit on any total of 16 or less, and must stand on 17 or higher. If the dealer draws to a soft 17 (an Ace plus a six), they also hit. These rules apply regardless of what you hold — the dealer has no choice.

Winning and Losing

If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s without busting, you win and receive a 1:1 payout — your bet is doubled. If you are dealt a natural Blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card on the first two cards), you win at 3:2, which means a $100 bet returns $150 in profit. If both you and the dealer have Blackjack, the hand is a push and your original bet is returned. If the dealer busts, all players still in the hand win automatically.

Blackjack Strategy Tips

Always Hit on a Hard 8 or Less

When your two-card total is 8 or lower, there is no risk of busting with one more card, so hitting is always the correct play. You can only improve your position.

Stand on Hard 17 or More

If your total is 17 or higher, the risk of busting by hitting outweighs the benefit. The dealer is statistically likely to bust on their own when showing a weak card, so protect a strong hand by standing.

Double Down on 10 or 11

When your two cards total 10 or 11, the probability of hitting a 10-value card (there are 16 of them in every 52-card deck) is high enough that doubling your bet is mathematically advantageous. This is one of the most powerful moves in the game when used at the right moment.

Read the Dealer’s Up Card

The dealer’s visible card is your most important piece of information. If the dealer shows a 4, 5 or 6, they are in a weak position and likely to bust. In these situations, standing on a modest total like 12 or 13 can be the right move — let the dealer take the risk. If the dealer shows a 10, Jack, Queen, King or Ace, play more cautiously and assume they have a strong hand.

Never Ignore Soft Hands

A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. Because the Ace can drop to 1 without busting you, soft hands give you much more flexibility. A soft 17 (Ace + 6) is a strong candidate for hitting or even doubling, because even if you draw a 10 you will end up with a hard 17 — no worse than where you started.
