Brick Breaker is one of the most enduring arcade games ever made. The concept is pure and simple: a wall of coloured bricks sits at the top of the screen, a ball bounces around, and your only tool is a paddle at the bottom that you control. Your job is to make sure the ball never falls off the edge while it smashes through every single brick on the screen.

A Quick History of the Brick-Breaking Genre
The genre traces its roots to Breakout, the 1976 Atari arcade game designed by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs before either of them became household names. The game was a spin-off of Pong, replacing the opponent paddle with a wall of bricks. It became an immediate hit.
In 1986, Taito released Arkanoid, which expanded the formula with power-ups, multiple levels and a science-fiction skin. That version introduced the elements that most modern brick-breaker games still use today: the multi-ball power-up, the wider paddle, the laser cannon. Arkanoid was so influential that many people refer to the entire genre simply as “Arkanoid-style games,” even though the underlying mechanics are free to use and have been reimagined thousands of times since.

How to Play Brick Breaker

The Objective
Clear every brick on the screen without letting the ball fall past the bottom edge. Each level presents a new arrangement of bricks. Some bricks require more than one hit to break. Destroy them all and you advance to the next level.
Controls
On desktop, move your mouse left and right to guide the paddle. You can also use the left and right arrow keys if you prefer the keyboard. On mobile and tablet, drag your finger across the screen to move the paddle, or tap the on-screen directional buttons. To launch the ball at the start of each life, click, tap, or press Space.
Lives and Scoring
You start each game with three lives. Every time the ball escapes past the paddle you lose one. Lose all three and it is game over. Points are awarded per brick destroyed, and the value increases with each level, so the further you progress the higher your score climbs. Your personal best is saved automatically so you always have something to beat next time.
Tips to Last Longer and Score Higher
Aim for the Top
Once the ball reaches the gap between the top row of bricks and the ceiling, it will bounce back and forth rapidly, destroying multiple bricks without you needing to do anything. Getting the ball up there early is worth far more than carefully aiming at individual bricks row by row.
Use the Edges of the Paddle
Where on the paddle the ball lands changes the angle it bounces at. Hitting with the centre sends the ball almost straight up. Hitting with the far left or right edge sends it off at a sharp angle. Learning to steer the ball with paddle placement — not just to reach it in time — is what separates good players from great ones.
Stay Calm When the Speed Increases
As the levels progress the ball moves faster. The natural reaction is to panic and make large, jerky movements with the paddle. That usually ends badly. Short, controlled corrections are almost always more effective than scrambling across the full width of the screen.
Watch the Ball, Not the Bricks
Beginners often stare at the bricks to plan where they want the ball to go. Experienced players keep their eyes on the ball. The bricks are not moving — the ball is. Track the ball and let the bricks take care of themselves.
